Try it Tuesday: Add Texture with Stencils
- May 5
- 3 min read

One of the easiest ways to add depth and interest to your handmade cards is by combining stencils with texture paste. This simple technique creates raised dimension, layered backgrounds, and beautiful detail that instantly makes your projects stand out.
This week’s Try It Tuesday feature focuses on creating textured floral backgrounds using stencils, texture paste, blending brushes, and ink blending techniques.
Whether you love mixed media or you’re just starting to experiment with texture, this is a fun technique that’s easy to customize for any style or color palette.
What You’ll Need
Stencils
Texture Paste
Palette Knife
Ink Pads
Blending Brushes
Cardstock
Embellishments or Die Cuts
Step 1: Apply Texture Paste
Secure your stencil over cardstock using low-tack tape or a sticky mat. Using a palette knife, spread a thin layer of texture paste across the stencil opening.
You don’t need a thick layer — a smooth, even coat works best.
Carefully lift the stencil while the paste is still wet and allow the panel to dry completely.
Step 2: Add Ink & Color
Once dry, lightly blend ink over the raised texture using a blending brush. The texture catches the color beautifully and helps highlight all the details in the stencil design.
Try layering multiple shades for extra depth and dimension.
Step 3: Embellish & Finish
Finish your card with dimensional flowers, die cuts, sentiments, gems, or splatter effects.
Texture backgrounds work beautifully behind focal images and can instantly elevate even simple card designs.
A Few Helpful Tips
Clean stencils immediately after using texture paste
Experiment with different stencil patterns for unique looks
Try metallic waxes or shimmer pastes for extra shine
Use coordinating ink colors to create a cohesive design
Texture techniques may look advanced, but they’re surprisingly beginner-friendly and incredibly fun to experiment with. Once you start adding texture to your projects, it’s hard to stop!
We’d love to see what you create using this week’s technique 💜
