5 Things to Know About ATC Cards

ATC cards (Artist Trading Cards) are one of our favorite ways to get creative without feeling overwhelmed. They’re small, fun, and perfect for trying new techniques.
Whether you’re brand new or just looking for something different, ATCs are a great way to jump in and start creating.
Here are five things to know — plus some of my favorite supplies to help you get started.
🎨 1. ATC = Artist Trading Card
These little cards are meant to be mini works of art. Think of them like tiny canvases where you can experiment, try new techniques, and just play.
Because they’re so small, they’re perfect for testing out ideas without committing to a full scrapbook page or journal spread.
🛍️ Supplies to Try:
Cardstock (for your base)
Pre-cut card bases (if available)
Scrap paper packs
📏 2. Always 2.5” x 3.5”
This is the standard ATC size, and part of what makes them so fun. The smaller size keeps things simple and manageable.
A good paper trimmer makes it easy to cut your cardstock down to the perfect size every time.
🛍️ Supplies to Try:
Fiskars Paper Trimmer
Ruler or measuring tools
Cardstock packs
🤝 3. Meant to Be Traded
ATCs are all about community. You create them to share and trade with other artists.
It’s a great way to connect with other creatives and build inspiration from what others are making.
But they can also be used on the fronts of cards, as journaling spaces on scrapbook layouts, or just as backgrounds to collage!
🛍️ Supplies to Try:
Small envelopes
Storage sleeves or containers
Ephemera packs for sharing
🎨 4. ANY Style Goes!
This is where ATCs really shine — there are no rules.
You can create:
Vintage-style cards
Scrapbook-inspired designs
Mixed media pieces
Stamped or inked cards
Whatever your style is, it works.
🛍️ Supplies to Try:
Stamps
Ink pads
Washi tape
Mixed media supplies
✂️ 5. Perfect for Using Scraps!
Have little bits of paper you don’t want to throw away? ATCs are the perfect place to use them.
They’re also a great way to try new techniques without worrying about messing up a bigger project.
🛍️ Supplies to Try:
Scrap packs
Patterned paper (Echo Park 👀)
Ephemera bundles
