Friday Top 5: Ways to Add Dimension to Your Cards
- Apr 24

There’s something that happens when you add just a little dimension to a card…
It stops feeling flat.
It starts feeling finished.
If you’ve ever looked at a card and thought, “Why does this one look so much better than mine?”
…this is usually why.
The good news?
You don’t need complicated techniques to get there.
Here are five simple ways to add dimension—and completely change the look of your cards.
1. Foam Tape
The Instant “POP”
If you’re just getting started with dimension, this is the easiest place to begin.
Use foam tape to:
Lift sentiments
Layer focal images
Add depth between panels
👉 Pro tip: stack two layers for even more height
It’s simple. It’s quick. And it makes a bigger difference than you’d expect.
2. Texture Paste
The “WOW” factor
Texture paste adds raised detail you can actually see and feel.
Use it with stencils to:
Create dimensional backgrounds
Add interest behind your focal point
Build subtle texture or bold patterns
You can even tint it with ink for custom colors.
This is one of those techniques that looks advanced—but is surprisingly easy once you try it.
3. Die Cuts
Built-in dimension
Layered die cuts give you dimension without needing foam.
Try:
Stacking multiple cuts for thickness
Building flowers or focal elements
Adding shadow layers behind sentiments
It creates a polished, professional look—and keeps your card easy to mail.
4. Embossing Techniques
Raised detail without bulk
There are two great ways to emboss:
Heat embossing for shiny, raised designs
Embossing folders for textured backgrounds
Both add visual interest without adding a lot of thickness—perfect for cleaner designs.
5. Embellishments
The finishing touches
This is where everything comes together.
Add:
Gems and sequins
Pearls
Chipboard or wood shapes
These small details draw the eye and give your card that final, finished look.
💡 Start Simple
You don’t need to use all five techniques at once.
In fact, you shouldn’t.
Start with just one:
Add foam tape to a sentiment
Try a stencil with texture paste
Add a few embellishments
That one small change can completely transform your card.
